Star Trek meets Planet of the Apes Simian Saturday Style!

Happy Simian Saturday Everyone!
Our Apes Victorious Google+ Group continues to grow and we've had some excellent posts already, really cool considering the Apes Victorious RPG hasn't been released yet.  Last year a fun limited series comic came out meshing classic POTA with TOS Star Trek!  Since the Apes Victorious RPG will work with Goblinoid Games Starships & Spacemen RPG this comic series seems like perfect inspiration for a crossover Apes/Spacemen game!

How cool is that cover?!
I found a picture of the series co-writer Scott Tipton's Mego collection, check this out!
You can see more of his pictures HERE.Have a wonderful Simian Saturday!

Review of Strange Stars

First I owe Trey Causey an apology, I should have done a review for Strange Stars way before now, the only excuse that I can offer is that I have honestly been swamped with work , school and family stuff. But Strange Stars is so cool that even those reasons are insufficient.  Strange Stars deserves to be talked about, discussed and most of all played!
This retro style sci-fi gazetteer draws from some great resources; Star Trek, Micronauts, Star Frontiers, there is even a subtle but strong dose of Talislanta in there (Talislanta IN SPAACE!). All good stuff!  And if you enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy then I think you will enjoy the ideas presented in this tome of Sci Fi coolness!
If you are looking for a resource of stat blocks, hyper detailed NPC's, extensive world information and such then you need to keep in mind that this isn't that kind of resource, instead it is a great snapshot of what looks like a really cool galaxy of adventure, that you will want to play in and make your own.  Each page is jam packed with snippets of the setting and just perusing this tome will give both you and your players ideas for your own Sci Fi campaigns.  The artwork is fantastic and really helps to capture the feel of the setting and get you immersed into it quickly. This resource gives you the right mix of ideas to grab a hold of and jump right into the setting.
Given that this is a system neutral setting book, I now just need to decide  what game system to use to run it? There is a Fate version due out soon, to be followed by a Stars Without Number version.  But I can see using this setting with Traveller or Savage Worlds.  Hmm...decisions decisions... In case you couldn't tell I'm very happy to have this as part of my collection.
Oh and Trey has added a ton of additional resources (including some game stats) for this setting over on his blog.  So check it out for more information.
You can grab a copy HERE

Star Trek Into Darkness

My wife and I got to go see the new Star Trek Movie last night.
We both really enjoyed it, seeing it has definately gotten me back into Sci Fi mode.  If you liked the last one you will like this one,  my wife is still not completely overjoyed about the whole reboot thing, but I'm ok with it.
Now to decide what mechanic to go with....Stars Without Number...X-plorers....Machinations of the Space Princess...Starships & Spacemen....decisions, decisions....

Starships & Spacemen : Bynars

I've been reading my copy of Starships and Spacemen 2nd ed. a bit.  Thought I'd try my hand at writing up an obscure alien race from TNG.

BYNARS

Requirements: INT 12
Ability Adjustments: STR -1, INT +2, CHA-1
Skill Adjustments: Combat -1, Technical +2
Metabolism: Cobalt Based
Bynars are a race of short humanoids (averaging a little over 5' tall) with lilac skin and enlarged skulls from the planet Bynaus in the Beta Magellan System. They are relatively new members of the Galactic Confederation.

Shortly after birth all Bynars undergo a procedure where their parietal lobe is surgically replaced with a synaptic processor. This processor connects them to the Bynaus Master Computer. It has been speculated that they are so interconnected with their Master Computer should anything ever happen to it, they would die. Due to being so interconnected with the master computer their language and thought patterns are as close to binary code as possible for organic beings. They can and do speak the Confederation Common tongue but pairs will quite regularly finish one another's sentences, often to the dismay of other races interacting with them.Even their names are a series of 1' and 0's. When speaking directly to one another they utilize a high pitched sound that is inaudible to other races. Each Bynar is equipped with a buffer to safely manage this high rate of information transfer. Bynars always work and live in pairs. Bynars are genetically bonded in pairs for life, should one of the pair meet an untimely accident the surviving Bynar must return to Bynaus where they will be matched to another (without a bonded partner a Bynar performs all actions at -2, until matched with a new partner). When working in pairs Bynars each get to roll 1d6+1 for the number of questions they may ask the computer at a given time.

Even though they are still fairly new members of Space Fleet, paired Bynars can sometimes be found at larger Star Bases, usually engaged in computer repairs and upgrading Space Fleet's Starship computers.

Obviously I took these from Star Trek The Next Generation. I think they only appeared in one episode TNG: 11001001

I'm not sure Starships and Spacemen 2nd ed. is going to replace Stars Without Number or X-plorers as my Sci Fi RPG of choice, but this was a fun exercise and these guys were pretty easy to stat up.

Starships & Spacemen 2nd Edition

I'm really excited about this Kickstarter! I've been hoping for this one to come out for quite awhile now. The fact that it is directly compatible with Labyrinth Lord AND Mutant Future is just sooo freakin' cool!  I can finally run my Kitchen Sink; Mutant Wizards in Spaace Campaign! If your at all interested please get on board and donate some $$ to make this happen!!!

Star Trek/Legion of Super Heroes #3

Picked this one up today!
Its the third issue in this series.  Things are finally rolling along.  I'm really hungry to learn more about this merged universe!  This issue features an awesome version of The Fatal Five! I must admit I had a nerdgasm when I saw what they had done to the Mugato!!  And the Emerald Empress, well she is Green! ; )
I can really see having a fun RPG Campaign with this new yet familiar universe!

Star Trek /Legion of Super Heroes!

I recently posted about a new limited series Star Trek/Legion of Super Heroes Mash up.  I picked up the second issue today.
I love the little tidbits they drop about this new Universe, just want to know more about it than what has been revealed so far.  : )
Check out the Controllers negotiating with the Organians or the Klingons vs. the Khunds, or Tyrraz; homeworld of the Borg!
      Good stuff!
Now thrown in my recent Marvel Aliens write ups for Stars Without Number and that is one wild Campaign Setting!....ok I'll go sit down now.

Gaming, Comics and stuff

My back is finally doing better, getting old is no fun.  Went by the Friendly Local Comic/Gaming Shop yesterday, figured I could pick up some reading material while I continue to mend.  Found a ton of stuff! I hadn't been there in awhile, the Pathfinder shelves were packed! I think they had some new 4E D&D items, but I don't even look at those anymore.  I resisted picking up more Pathfinder product, don't get me wrong Paizo puts out awesome stuff, I was just looking for something different. Right before I got hurt I ran a session of Castles & Crusades which was a blast, I'll try to post about it soon, probably gonna play it some more, but I was looking for something different to read and get inspired by...
I found it on the Comic Book aisle!
DC has relaunched some of their titles, I won't get into that, I know some folks aren't happy about it but I was always more of a Marvel guy so it didn't bug me, + after they kept going up in price I quit buying them so much...anyways I spotted a couple of titles on the shelf that looked interesting to me. First up:
                         Frankenstein Agent of Shade
This is pretty sweet! It features Frankenstein with Guns! and even has some from the old Creature Commandos line that I loved back in the day.  This has some great inspiration for gaming, heck I ran something similar with this for D20 Modern many years ago...and if you wanted to lose the guns I can see it working with D&D as well. Heck with Pathfinder having the Gunslinger class you wouldn't even have to lose the guns really... I'm gonna have to follow this series for sure...
But what really sparked my interest was what I found next!  Those who follow my blog will know I've been on a bit of a Sci Fi kick of late, well with my Gamer ADD I'm all over the place...anyways, I spied something that really got my attention...check out the cover!
Two Awesome things Combined; Star Trek with Legion of Super Heroes!  Yeah, I know I said I was more into Marvel, but the Legion were always cool, I enjoy Cosmic Super Heroes and the Legion has always sparked my interest.  This is a six issue mini-series, where an alternate universe is created and a team of Legionairres and a Star Trek away team have to set things right.  Instead of the Federation we have the Imperial Planets of Terra, which is a mixture of Star Trek and Legion of Super Heroes!!!  I was always a fan of the Star Trek Mirror Universe also so this makes it even cooler to me!  Here's another teaser...
Awhile back I did several alien races from Marvel Comics for the Stars Without Number RPG even worked up The Dreamer race directly from the Legion of Super Heroes for the game! I'm going to be following this mini-series for sure, I think this will be the perfect background for a great SWN Campaign, instead of the Terran Mandate mentioned in the SWN Rules, the Imperial Planets of Terra can be slipped right in there, using familiar things yet with very different twists.  Will probably still have The Scream occur, but can work in Star Trek races and Legion races in a new setting! Woo Hoo!
Could also use this with X-plorers, but for some reason I'm seeing this work better with the SWN rules...
Hmmmm things to ponder.. Feel free to comment, would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.
Anyways I guess I've rambled on enough! Hope everyone has a safe and awesome Sunday!

Prime Directive Traveller!

I just recently read where the Prime Directive RPG will be adapted to the Mongoose Traveller System.  I think this is awesome news!  This makes the Gamer Geek in me all giddy, much like the Crew in the photo above.  I can see mixing all kinds of things; Andorian Commandos battling Vargr Corsairs, while a Strontium Dog hunts down a rogue Vulcan Psion in the ruins of The Cursed Earth... Oh my!   : )
The recent Klingon Gorillas post I did featured the cover of the d20 Modern version of a supplement from the Prime Directive game.

Klingon Gorillas!!

In doing my digging around the internet for Sci Fi gaming resources,  I found this!!

Klingon Gorilla Shock Troops!! HOLY CRAP!!!
It's actually a Slirdarian bear-ape, but I like the artist going with a more gorilla than bear approach.
You can see the original artwork here.  My players are probably happy I didn't have this back when we were playing D20 Modern/Future! I may have to track this down for future use.  D6 anyone?  ; )

Simian Saturday Bonus: The Woogatu

Inspired by my earlier post today, I thought I'd work up the Chewie/Mugato into a race for Stars Without Number.  Thought some of you might get a kick out of it. So without further ado I present the Woogatu.

"Fearsome simian warriors, as brave as they are strong"
The Woogatu are a tall humanoid race of simian ancestry. They are stronger than the average human and are covered in white fur; also they have a rhinoceros-like horn in the center of their forehead. The Woogatu originally hailed from Neurakash; a distant temperate world of vast ancient forests and rolling hills. In the past they were divided into two groups; the People of the Tree Villages (Tree People for short) and the Hill People. The Hill people were more savage than the Tree People and possessed a poisonous bite that their Tree dwelling kin lacked.
The flora and fauna of Neurakash is particularly dangerous, and the closer one gets to the ground the more dangerous the wildlife becomes. For this reason in the ancient past the Tree People, built their homes and villages in the tops of the large trees native to Neurakash. The Tree people developed a more advanced civilization and culture than the Hill People. Over time, The Hill people resented their treetop dwelling brothers and attacked their kin whenever they could. The Tree people pitied their lesser brothers but defended themselves fiercely whenever they were attacked. The Hill people were never powerful enough to eliminate their hated brothers but continued to war upon them for years, succeeding only in slowly diminishing their own numbers. The two races existed in this state for centuries…

Then the Terrans came…

Immediately the Terrans saw the potential of the Woogatu race, not as friends and allies, but as pawns, tools, and slaves. The fearsome Woogatu fought back bravely but the Terrans skillfully used the ancient hatred between the Hill and Tree people against each other and this combined with the Terran skill with psionics and higher technology came to dominate the Woogatu race. The Hill People too savage to be effectively controlled and too dangerous with their venomous bite were in a few short years rendered virtually extinct. The more sophisticated Tree People however, were enslaved and split up, entire families were scattered across the galaxy put to use in mines, shipyards, and other areas. Holding their families hostage, the Terrans even found ways to force these loyal warriors to fight for the Terran cause, these reluctant Woogatu warriors served their Terran Masters for fear that their loved ones, always kept elsewhere, would be mistreated.
Then came the Scream….The Woogatu used this to turn on their enslavers, and to try to escape to freedom. Many died during this time, but some survived this dark period. But their race was forever diminished, not numerous to begin with, and scattered across the galaxy with no easy way to reunite with their people.
The Woogatu are a very long lived race, some alive today are said to still recall the time of The Scream. However, it is believed that the Woogatu are slowly dying out, the Woogatu mate for life and those that were separated from their mates by the Terrans put all their energy into trying to find their families. Even when this seemed hopeless, they resisted taking new mates and starting new families. Some did so, hence there are still some young Woogatu alive today, but their numbers are small and the galaxy is a dangerous place.
One would think that as a whole the Woogatu would have an instinctual hatred of Terrans, some do, particularly the old ones, but most Woogatu judge each individual on their own merits and in spite of their treatment in the ancient past will work with humans that treat them with respect and dignity. Some have even taken on humans as though they were part of their extended family.

Woogatu as Player Characters
Woogatu PC's are required to have at least a 17 strength, due to the incredible strength possessed by these humanoids. In dire situations Woogatu can gore with their horns, for 1d4 points of damage, but they will only do so in severe need, as this reminds them of the savagery of their Hill People kin. Given their thick fur hide, they have no need of wearing light to medium cold weather gear in terrain that would require such to be worn. Also due to their thick fur they find armor of any kind to be extremely uncomfortable and will not wear it.
Woogatu can be found as Mercenaries, Bounty Hunters, Techs and Scouts throughout the galaxy, indeed they have shown a remarkable diversity in their skills and abilities, seeming to only lack in the area of psionics.

Neurakash
Homeworld of the Woogatu
Atmosphere : Breathable
Temp: Temperate
Bio: Miscible
Pop: Tens of Thousands (Humans and Woogatu) Official population difficult to determine.
Tech Level: 2 (With some lower and higher tech enclaves)
Tags: Hostile Biosphere,Colonized Population (Terran hold outs)
Enemies: Fearsome native predator(s),
Friends: Captain Tiberius Solo,
Complications: Disease breaks out, Humans blame the Woogatu for local troubles
Things: Lost Pretech Cache,
Places: Treetop City, Hidden Hill People Lair, Abandoned Terran Outpost, Treetop Starport

Neurakash is a temperate world of vast ancient forests and rolling hills. The flora and fauna of the planet are particularly dangerous, many of the world's inhabitants dwell in the higher reaches of the giant trees found on this world. Neurakash is currently in a state of chaos. The Terrans lost their choke hold on the planet during The Scream, and while there is still a significant human population on the planet, they are rapidly descending into barbarism. Many human villages are closer to tech level 1 and day to day survival is a struggle, they fight the fearsome local wildlife, each other, as well as, the Woogatu. The Woogatu (Tree People) are struggling to recover from their period of enslavement by the terrans, but having so much of their population sent off world or killed has left a lasting negative impact on their society and culture, A few rare individuals have managed to return to their homeworld, but those are few and far between. To add to their troubles rumors persist that the Hill People have returned….

Where No Man Has Gone Before!

Yesterday I posted a bit about this free Microlite 20 Star Trek TOS RPG.  I've since had time to read it some more.  I must admit I quite like it!  My buddy Eli has even worked up a character sheet for it.  I'm thinking it would at minimum be a sweet con game, I can see even using some stuff from the awesome Stars Without Number RPG with it, especially the GM Tools/Templates section.
"Live Long and Prosper!" -B
