Game Night!

Well after a long hiatus, I actually got to game last night. The really cool part is that I was able to be a player, I wind up DMing 99.9% of the time, so this was  a real treat for me. the other great part is I got to play in an OSR game, Labyrinth Lord! This was especially cool for me, when I do get to play as a player it is in the more modern systems; 3.x, Pathfinder, 5E, so this was an unexpected treat. We had originally planned on playing 5E but due to work and life stuff, we opted to go with an old school simpler game.  The DM did a fantastic job and most of the players were experienced, skilled role players. I think the DM was using a modified published module, but the way he was pulling stuff out of Dungeon Alphabet, I have no idea what published adventure it originally was, it was fantastic! Beware of magical streams and fountains! The group have all played most editions of D&D and many other RPG's, so we brought a lot of experience to the table. The teamwork was great, and we were able to overcome some tough encounters using teamwork and strategy. Several players had just recently played Pathfinder, and they commented how much more lethal and gritty LL felt to them, I agreed with them, we had MANY close calls last night, and missed a TPK by the skin of our teeth, IT WAS AWESOME! Mind you I'm not knocking other games, I've had a blast playing Pathfinder, 5E and other stuff over the years, but something about this session just really clicked for me.   We are planning on playing again next week, I can't wait!

Space Riders

After seeing some reviews for this online, I couldn't resist ordering the TPB collecting the first 4 issues of this series.  In a word Space Riders is Crazy Good!  The artwork is...well I've seen it described as psychedelic with a serious nod to Jack Kirby and I think that sums up the art nicely.  This is a Gonzo, Psychedelic, Sci Fi, Wild and Crazy Space Comic!

Into the Odd

I recently came across a rules-lite RPG that has really sparked my interest.  Yes, I know you are thinking good grief man, don't you have enough RPG's on your shelf that you don't have time to play as it is?  All true, all very true.  However, the issue regarding limited (ok, nonexistent) free time, is what has drawn me back to the OSR and rules lite gaming. This from a guy who  used to regularly DM Pathfinder.  Thanks to games like White Star, I'm find myself with a renewed interest in rules-lite systems.  That's where Into the Odd comes in.  This is a really awesome and fun RPG that I can't wait to play.  I saw where someone compared it to if Lamentations of the Flame Princess and Numenera had conceived a love child and I can see that.  You can literally make up a character in under 5 minutes.  Combat is super-fast and lethal, and the game has a cool freshness to it, that a sometimes jaded old gamer like myself finds refreshing. I wanted to draw attention to Justin's Field Guide to Doomsday blog.  He has been posting some truly inspired Scooby-Doo Mutant Future (What's Nuked Scooby Doo) mash-up posts, that I can't wait to use in my next Mutant Future game. He has been posting like a mad man, and his critters are truly inspired! I need to dust off my Mutant Future books and get back to some Mutant Future gaming!
