And Now Back to Savage Worlds...

With the recent announcement about Savage Worlds Rifts, I pulled out my copy of the Savage Worlds Deluxe Explorer's Edition, along with the few other Savage Worlds books that I own. I thought it would be a good idea to refresh my knowledge of the Savage Worlds system and maybe start working on building a Campaign. The Rifts edition isn't due out until Christmas, and I know delays may happen, but with my schedule being so crazy with real life obligations and such, starting sooner rather than later, is probably a good idea.
At one time I had a few other Savage Worlds books, but this is my current collection. I just picked up the Sci Fi Companion this week and am still reading it over.  The Darwin's World books are from an earlier edition of Savage Worlds, so I may have to do a bit of conversion work for those two (anyone know of a conversion document that updates stuff to Deluxe?, I think Guts was one of the bigger changes).  The white book with the upside down flag is Planet MF'er, a damn cool book with some jacked up stuff in it. I can see a fun campaign with just this collection of books.  : )

With all the cool Sci Fi stuff coming out  this summer and fall; movies, T.V., etc, I may try to run some space opera stuff this summer to prep for the awesomeness of Rifts. Trey's  Strange Stars is a great system neutral sourcebook, and Mike over at the WrathofZombie blog has been doing some great Savage Worlds conversions!  And if I need to throw some Marvel aliens into the mix, my buddy Giles over at the Worlds Galore blog has been posting a bunch of cool Savage Worlds write-ups, Thanos anyone?
Anyways just a random Sunday afternoon post.  Hope everyone is having a good weekend.
Now back to the books!

Rifts Savage Worlds!

Rifts is coming to Savage Worlds!!!
The announcement today really  knocked my socks off! I'm excited and quite hopeful about this one.  I loved playing Rifts back in the day, but the system just doesn't work for me these days, especially character creation.  My gaming schedule is hectic and crazy at best, non-existent at worst, time is a very hot commodity around these parts. Savage Worlds is Fast, Furious and Fun and Rifts as a setting is just Awesome!  This is all kinds of chocolate in my peanut butter... course I'm a diabetic so I'm definitely in trouble with this one!
I'm soo ready for this!!

Guardians of the Galaxy

Jay has been posting up a storm about the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie, this movie is really getting me excited.  I've been a big fan of The Guardians of the Galaxy comics (old and new) for a long time, so this should rock!  I don't see Bug from the Micronauts in the lineup though so that's a bit disappointing.  Anyways I think this will be my next Sci Fi Campaign!  Now to decide on the rule system to use; X-plorers, Stars Without Number, Rogue Space, Machinations of the Space Princess, Savage Worlds..so many choices!!  I did do an X-plorers conversion for Rocket awhile back, course I've also done a ton of Marvel  Aliens conversions for Stars Without Number...my recent foray into Rogue Space showed me I can run crazy off the cuff adventures (which is very much in the spirit of Guardians of the Galaxy), hmmm decisions decisions...

Long time followers of my blog know I'm a fan of Sci Fi and Lego and I just saw where there will be Lego sets for Guardians of the Galaxy!  Can't wait to see how these look!  I'll be using them for minis in my Campaign!

Savage Worlds Broken Earth

The Savage Worlds edition of Broken Earth has been released in PDF.
They will also be releasing a Pathfinder version for those that are interested (I doubt I will get the Pathfinder edition, I need less rules these days.  LOL ).  This is the complete game, a Player's Guide has been out for a bit, But this release has the Player's Guide material and the GM Guide all in one.  I haven't posted much about Savage Worlds lately, but I think that will be changing.  I recently picked up the Savage Worlds Deluxe Edition, very cool book.  It explains things IMHO better than in earlier editions.  Anyways I haven't picked up Savage Worlds Broken Earth yet, but it is on my list!  : )
Oh and I swear they used our cat for the cover of this!  LOL

Gaming Update

Our Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperborea Campaign got derailed by the Holidays, the Flu, Work and the Polar Vortex.  I Hope to pick it up again soon, it is a great game!
We did play a game of Pathfinder a Sunday ago, my buddy Clint ran it.  He did a good job, but going from a simpler rules system like AS&SH to Pathfinder was a bit of a system shock for all of us.  We also noted how much longer the combat in Pathfinder took.  So not sure if we will continue the Pathfinder game or not.  I've picked up a few new gaming goodies (Rogue Space, D30 Sandbox Companion, Savage Worlds Deluxe) that I will hopefully be discussing on the blog.  I saw The Hobbit...oh my!  I kept waiting for Jack Sparrow to jump in at some point.  It was an entertaining movie, but not the version of The Hobbit that I envisioned. Hope to get back to posting more soon.  I mainly just wanted to drop in and say hello.

Black Friday/Cyber Monday Sales!

I do my best to avoid going outside of the house on Black Friday, although my wife did "force" me to go to Old Time Pottery today...which turned into a "quick" trip to Garden Ridge which...well you get the idea.
But thanks to the wonderful world of the internet I can do my personal shopping at home! Woo Hoo!
In reading my buddy Tommy's blog The Most Unread Blog on the Internet. Ever. I learned of some great sales in the pdf gaming world!
I've been eyeing Interface Zero for Savage Worlds for awhile now, and at the bargain price of $8 I picked it up, not too mention several other pdfs for $1 a piece, including Silver Gryphon Games' Wellstone City line, looks like a really cool Gritty Urban Locale that I can tweak for my own dastardly purposes (right now I'm thinking of tweaking it to use as the main locale for a possible Interface Zero Campaign). I grabbed the Icons Super Hero RPG rules too, not sure about Fate based supers, but it was only a BUCK!
I'm still an old fashioned book in hand sort of guy but I figure I can check out the pdfs for a great price and the ones that really float my boat I'll pick up in print at some point.

Well gotta run, have alot of reading to do!!                              *insert maniacal laughter here*

Warp Riders

I was recently  made aware that the group The Sword has released their third album; Warp Riders. I really like this band, so asap I went out and picked up the album.  I was not disappointed and as an added bonus, I found the album cover to be quite awesome!
This just begs to be a used as inspiration for a Sci-Fi Campaign!  Now to just decide on a rules system??
Mini-Six, Savage Worlds, Traveller, hmm things to ponder!

Latest Acquisitions...Bargains!!

Here's the latest additions to my RPG collection.  All three of the above were acquired at bargain prices!  I know the systems are all over the place, guess I'm just an eclectic gamer!  Everstone is one I had not heard of before, until I saw Tetsubo talk about it over on his Youtube Channel.  It is d20 based, specifically off of the BESM d20 system. While lately I have shied away from 3.x based games this one looked pretty interesting and I couldn't resist the price.  $5 bucks!  That's right I picked this up for only $5 and its a hardback book.  The art is pretty good, and the whole setting has some cool features to it, reminds me in some ways of the Eberron setting, but I like this setting better than Eberron. Anyways check out Tetsubo's post if you want more info about it, he goes into a pretty detailed review of the game.  Next is the Basic Roleplaying System Core Rulebook, AncientVaults hooked me up with this copy for a great price.  I haven't had time to really read much of it, but it looks like a pretty solid system and I saw where there is a recently released P.A. Campaign released for BRP called Rubble & Ruin, so I may have to check that out.  Finally I recently found the Savage Worlds pre-Explorer's edition of 50 Fathoms in the bargain bin at my FLGS.  One of my gaming buds (Derelict Man) gave it a good review and for the price I had to pick it up.  I am glad I did.  It's a great book, awesome resource for Savage Worlds. Now I've just got to find the time to play some of these games.  *sigh*

Sorcery & Super Science!

Looks like there are more and more Post Apocalyptic RPG's coming out these days. I just stumbled across this today to be put out by Expeditious Retreat Press (they've done some good stuff in the past so I'm hopeful).  I have no idea what mechanic it will be using.  Here's the blurb about it:

"After the cracking of the moon and before the rise of Atlantis the world was a place strange to the thoughts of honest men. The death throes of science amid the birth of magic sculpted new generations of conquerors who strode the lands forging civilizations of steel, sinew, and sorcery from the decrepit hulks of the ones that fell before. Tyrannical wizards, amoral super-scientists, charismatic catalysts, and multifarious mutants battled for wealth, power, and honor. It was ten thousand years of barbarity; ten thousand years spent in the shadowy shells of past glories, hiding from horrible creatures that scratched and skittered for blood; ten thousand years of tyranny and injustice, ten thousand years of Sorcery & Super Science!"

I'm also pleased to have learned that the Darwin's World Savage Worlds conversion is still a go, no release date yet, but I've been looking forward to this coming out for awhile. Darwin's World is a great game, the second edition was done up for D20 Modern and is very well done.  I've just found myself shifting to more simplified game systems these days. Plus many of my gaming buds are into Savage Worlds.  Now if we could just get a new edition of Savage Worlds : Hell on Earth!

I'm also privy to some other upcoming P.A. RPG releases from some other folks (Not-Savage Worlds related), can't say anything right now, but some more good stuff is a coming!  ; )

It's a great time to be a P.A. gamer!

Neptunians, an Alien Race for Savage Worlds

Looks like I may get to do some gaming soon.  A buddy of mine; Derelict Man has been talking to me about Savage Worlds. I've posted a bit about the game on my blog before but unfortunately haven't gotten the opportunity to actually play it. He seems to have a good handle of the rules and has even offered to run a few sessions so I can get a better feel for it. I've found some awesome resources for Savage Worlds on the 'net.  There are some great conversions of well almost everything out there. And the folks on the Pinnacle forums seem to be really nice and helpful.
So until we can get our schedules to sync I figured I play around with the rules a bit myself.  You guys know how much I love working up critters and converting stuff from other sources.  So I thought I try to stat up an alien race to see how it works.  I decided on an obscure Mego Star Trek toy for this one.  The Neptunian

Neptunian

Scholars and scientists cannot agree about the origins of this alien race. How they even came to be called Neptunians is unclear. They are certainly not from the planet Neptune in the Sol system. Very little is known about these fearsome aliens. What is known is that they are quite aggressive and all attempts at peaceful interaction and diplomacy with these aliens have failed.
In the Slipstream Campaign Setting they are most often encountered living on small fragments scattered about that pocket universe or upon wrecked vessels in the Graveyard region of space. In non-Slipstream settings they can be found on light gravity worlds. Any intruders that come into their domain are attacked. They will usually set up ambush locations, using wrecks and other tempting debris to set up traps for intruders. They will then use their gliding ability to "get the drop on" their victims. While not true flyers, they make the most of height and light gravity to accomplish attacks that flying creatures can do on regular worlds and fragments. Also spending much time on thinner atmosphere worlds and asteroids has made them more resistant to negative environmental conditions than most other races. So they are often able to survive and even thrive on fragments and worlds that other races would deem uninhabitable.

• Clumsy: The hands of the Neptunians are not as well developed for fine manipulation as humans and other races, so they suffer a -2 penalty on all rolls where fine manipulation is required, such as lock picking or repair.
• Gliders: Neptunians can glide, descending 1" vertically for every 2" moved horizontally (in light gravity conditions they can glide much farther). They also gain the new agility based skill, Flying, at d6. This may be improved normally. A Flying roll during a round in which a Neptunian glides allows it to stay level for that round. A raise allow them to climb 1", but sacrifices 2" of horizontal distance.
• Outsider: Neptunians have a well deserved reputation for being cunning ambushers and savage killers. They suffer a -2 to Charisma when interacting with other races.
• Claws: Neptunians have fearsome claws on their hands and feet giving them the ability to do Str +d6 attacks. They can use the claws on their feet to attack while gliding. These claws also allow them to get a +2 bonus to all climb rolls.
• Environmental Resistance: Due to their habitat Neptunians have an innate bonus of +2 vs. all negative environmental effects (heat, cold, pressure, etc.).
So there you go, this didn't take me long to work up at all. I may have made some mistakes with it, since this was my first real attempt to create a race for Savage Worlds, but I'm pretty pleased with how easy it was to work them up with this system.
Loosely based on the Mego Star Trek Action Figure that was never actually in TOS.

The Outer Space Men!!!

When I was a kid I had this awesome colorforms set... I know I am showing my age, some of you may not even know what "colorforms" are. Anyways it was this awesome set of these Space Aliens.  The cover of the box looked like a picture of actual action figures.  I soooo wanted those figures. But never found them...
Well fast forward many many years later and I've found them! Sort of! Turns out the figures were done back in 1968 and were well received but additional releases never happened. But the original line inspired how action space figures were to be done for generations.  Now 42 years later they are back!
The Outer Space Men
They are being released as 3 3/4" action figures, including a graphic novel.  The art alone give me all kinds of ideas for gaming!  I see great RPG potential!

Follow the above link and check out the gallery picture of
Astro-Nautilus!
Might could use Goblinoid Games upcoming LL compatible Starships and Spacemen rules along with a healthy dose of Mutant Future to play an Outer Space Men Campaign...or Savage Worlds might be the way to go!  Hmmm now wheres my copy of Slipstream!  Mwha ha ha!!
Oh sorry anyways I just thought this was cool and brought up some ancient memories from my childhood.

Runners (Sci Fi Comic Coolness!)

I'd like to direct you to an on-line sci fi comic Runners.  It's by Sean Wang, and I personally think it is quite good.  Go back to the first issue and read from there, it will make alot more sense.  I think the setting is perfect for a cool sci fi rpg.  Interesting characters, cool backstory, I'd love to run a sci fi campaign set in the Runners universe.  I could see the Savage Worlds rules being perfect for this type of campaign.

Savage Worlds Slipstream

I haven't been posting much this week, work has kept me pretty busy.  But I wanted to mention a cool campaign setting I picked up awhile ago for Savage Worlds.

Slipsteam
It is not a hard sci fi setting by any means, it is instead a retro-sci fi setting (a la Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon).  With these rules you can play out Flash Gordonesque adventures in a big way!  I particulary like the alien generation rules.  Allowing you to work up your own interesting races for the setting. Although it has several included (Hawkmen, Robot Men, Space Amazons).  It has a plot point campaign adventure path, but it's quite easy to work up your own stuff as well.  I haven't gotten to play it yet, but it is definately cool.  I recently picked up Savage Worlds Mars (during the Adamant's awesomeThanksgiving $1 Sale ), I'm thinking I can definately use stuff from it as well.
Good Gaming!

Adamant's $1 Sale!!!

Shifting gears from all of my Mutant Future posts...I wanted to let you guys know that Adamant Entertainment has a sale going on (stops tomorrow I think), you can get alot of their pdf products for a $1.
How cool is that?!!
I picked up Tome of Secrets for Pathfinder (regularly $34.95 for a $1) & Mars: Savage World edition (regularly $34.95 for a $1). I also got Rebels of Mars a new Savage Worlds adventure featuring Civil War Confederates transported to Mars,(being a Southerner I found this to be particularly interesting).

So just thought I'd pass the info along.  I know everyone is trying to make the most of their budgets; gaming or otherwise.
Good Gaming!

Savage Steel

Tommorrow we've got session three of our Pathfinder Campaign, having alot of fun with that, but I'm always keeping my eyes & ears open for other games. I've been hearing alot of great things about Savage Worlds lately. I've got the Explorer's Edition, and Slipstream but have not gotten to play it yet. I heard some good stuff about Legends of Steel, a Sword & Sorcery Conanish setting that has a Savage Worlds version, so of course I got a copy. I'm still reading it but I'm liking it. It is higher powered than regular Savage Worlds; characters start out as Seasoned, and some of the Edges are pretty powerful, but it fits the genre nicely. I'll keep you posted.

Lookin' at Savage Worlds

I didn't get to attend the last 4E game, had some family type stuff to do. I hear it went ok, although half the group didn't make it. We are looking at shuffling the group a bit, trying to find some new members that can meet somewhat more regularly. Also looking at changing locale and game day/time. Playing at the FLGS keeps my furniture intact (last group that gamed at my house accidentally broke a chair and a window, no alcohol was involved), but some of the "locals" at the FLGS can be a tad bothersome. We shall see, I miss the marathon game sessions of my youth, but being an old coot, means I just can't stay up all night gaming like I used too. The guys are interested in possibly trying out the Pathfinder RPG, but we are also discussing other options. I've been eyeballing Savage Worlds (Explorer's Edition), and with our game time being so limited and it being hard for everyone to make it regularly, Savage Worlds might work better in the interim, at least until we can get the group "reworked". It does seem to live up to its buzz words; Fast, Furious, Fun!
Speaking of Savage Worlds I found a pretty cool webcomic for one guys gaming group http://shawntionary.com/clockworks/ it's based on a Savage Worlds Steampunk/Fantasy Campaign. I've never tried Steampunk but the comic is pretty cool.
