May the Blessings of the Hula Goddess be upon you!

One of my players couldn't make the first session of our Mutant Future game, you know the one-shot that has now gone on for three sessions : ) So I worked him into the second session (summary of that one to follow soon, I hope) anyways I thought I would give you his background just to add a bit more info for those of you who might be interested in our Campaign.

The below events took place during the events of session 1.
Natorg (pronounced NAY-torg) listened intently to the trader's words... while he couldn't see him very well (with his diminished eyesight he couldn't see much beyond 50') his ears were fine, some would say even better than most. "Red Spotted Fever had broken out over in JymsWard and everyone knows you die from that. To make things worse a Healer that went to help was kidnapped by The Goatlords! Yeah, JymsWard  was in a bad way, shame theres some decent folks livun there". Natorg wondered what toast was for a bit, but cast the thought aside as he made up his mind, he knew where the Goatlords lived, it wasn't that far away actually, if you took the right tunnels, he'd slip in and maybe just maybe he could rescue the Healer! He'd be a hero, and then maybe his people would let him sit at the fireside and share the choice cuts of rat meat and fungi bread! He couldn't help that his skin was deadly poison to most, why they held it against him, he just couldn't understand.
Natorg geared up, made sure his latex yellow gloves were intact and untorn (wouldn't want to accidentally poison the healer!), the moto sickle helm handed down from his grandfather on his head complete with his sell fone com unit headset (Hork said it was broken, but what did that idiot know, the hula goddess said he was jealous and the hula goddess was always right), he made sure the pride of his possessions the sacred, blessed hula goddess was securely fixed atop his moto sicle helm. Natorg prayed to her and she talked to him through the sell fone. Yes this was the right decision. He strapped on his short sword, (the others wouldn't let him have anything better than that) and headed out for adventure!!

                         Campaign info on Ghetto Hall

                                         Ghetto Hall
Several days travel to the west of Gaxville beyond The Mazes and "safely" below the eyes of the various gangs and mutant monsters that fight for control of the ruins above lies Ghetto Hall, a small underground community of mutant humans, although calling it a community is a bit of a stretch, the community is located in an old tunnel of the ancients (fortunately if the tunnel ever connected to Trog Territory that section has long since collapsed). They survive by fungi farming, and supplement their diet with any rats, and insects that they can catch. On rare occasions a trader will stop in to see if these tunnel dwellers have uncovered any bit of useful tech for trade. Unknown to most the community also has a water supply that is only "partially" polluted.  The "Leader" of Ghetto Hall is Hork the Hairy, leader mostly because he is the biggest and strongest, he proclaims his undying love for the mutant female Scaleface, although she thus far has done nothing to encourage his advances.  Scaleface is popular with the tunnel's denizens, should she ever agree to become Hork's bride that could change things in Ghetto Hall dramatically.

I worked up Ghetto Hall and the info about it, however gotta give my buddy Michael credit, he worked up his character concept (including worshipping the hula goddess via his broken cell phone) on the spot from the random gear that I had him roll for, I use some crazy tables to see what kind of stuff they have just to add to the feel of the game.

Mutant Future Campaign Session 1

It's taken me forever to finish this up, I posted the campaign Introduction  awhile ago, you may want to reread it so the below session makes a bit more sense. Now I'm two sessions behind on session summaries.  I went the very detailed route for this one, will probably go a bit more streamlined for future ones.  Anyways here it is sorry for the delay.

Mutant Future Campaign

Session 1
November 7, 2010

With sickness quickly overwhelming the community, the elders (most of whom are quite ill themselves) are only able to find three individuals able to make the journey. The community’s two resident mutant plants (apparently immune to the disease); Cactus Jack and Prickly Pete wanted to go on the journey as well, but the elders decided someone must stay behind to man the walls and keep the beasts and monsters of the ruins at bay. The trio chosen by fate, more than anything else, consist of Bishop a chameleon skinned android of the ancients, Tink R. Bell a mutant human with a powerful damage turning ability and an uncanny knack for rigging technical weapons and gear and Sherman a mutant human with a quick mind and unfailing sense of direction (perfect to get the party through The Maze), don’t ask about his prehensile tongue.
The group will set out at dawn with what weapons, gear and provisions that could be spared. They understood that time was of the essence, if they can’t get back in two weeks, they won’t have a home to come back too. Before departing Sherman spent time with the community’s lead scout Krash Helmut, who although too sick to make the journey himself, gives detailed instructions on how to find The Goatlords’ lair. Sherman sketches out a map and takes supplies to aid them on their quest, making sure he has his trusty Ball Peen Hammer packed. Bishop, is a relative newcomer to the community, he was found trapped under the debris and rubble of a ruined building by a recent scouting expedition into the wastes and was reactivated by the community’s Chief Examiner; Caractacus Potts. Bishop has no memory of his “life” before but serves the community loyally. He is presented with Caractacus’ own black powder rifle and a “brace” of Pub Darts to help with their mission. Tink in cooperation with Sherman used his mutant enhanced tinkering skills to maximize the most damage potential from all of their weapons. Tink also works on Sherman’s armored “coat” of scrap metal, mesh and bits turning it into something a bit more wearable and functional. Tink wearing his biker jacket and waving his family heirloom Cricket Bat into the air states that they are ready to depart!
After being out for just a short time, the party, of would-be heroes soon runs into trouble. Upon approaching Rubble Towers, they were soon in combat with not only a massive mutie lizard but a giant Radscorpion as well, Bishop proved to be a terrible shot with his black powder rifle, although it made for one heck of a loud boom echoing throughout the ruins. The lizard leapt off of a nearby tower and Tink kept himself from becoming lizard chow only through the last minute use of his damage turning ability which caused the mutant lizard to severely damage itself. The party quickly positioned themselves between the lizard and the scorpion which led to the giant scorpion to opt to dine on the injured lizard instead of the party. The scorpion drug the lizard carcass off for eating. But before the party could congratulate themselves, a hulking scaly mutant humanoid leapt from a nearby tower and finished off the scorpion and then turned its attention to the group! They threw everything they had at the fearsome beast, even calling upon the sacred purple goddess to aid them (The d30 that I allow them each to roll once per game)! After suffering a good bit of damage, and Sherman coming within inches of certain death they finally defeated the beast. What it was for certain none knew (well I knew, it was an Abominite, and in reality it was a juvenile one! *evil grin*)
All three decided harvesting the Scorpion venom was a good idea and managed to get enough to coat their arrows fully (the group had been given two longbows and a rather limited number of arrows by the community elders before departing). While Tink did this, Bishop was able to harvest enough of the scorpion’s busted hide to rig some carapace bracers for himself. Sherman meanwhile exhibited a mutant power the others didn’t know he possessed; he quickly healed himself of all the massive damage he had suffered.
Satisfied they resumed their journey. Heading deeper into the ruins and rubble, it was only Sherman’s innate direction sense that kept them from getting hopelessly lost. Along the way when time permitted they scavenged here and there, finding a bit of copper wire, some metal scraps etc. Time was of the essence so they tarried none the least. At one point they found a well made and curiously rust free wheelchair, with a human skeleton lying on the ground nearby. The wheelchair had an embossed “X” on it. Tink and Sherman studied it and found it could collapse into a small handy size for ease of carrying; it seemed to have a solar energy source too. They packed it away and kept moving. Tink and Bishop continued to be impressed with Sherman’s ability to navigate the ruins, where they saw only endless rubble he seemed to clearly be able to discern a path.

The day progressed; occasionally a rat or other unseen beast scurried about in the ruins. The rubble became more and more difficult to travel, yet Sherman kept to the path. Moving ever closer to their destination they avoided a web-filled alley, giving a shudder at the humanoid shaped forms encased in the webs hanging far overhead. Picking their way through the ruins and rubble they soon found their path filled by a low hanging purple fog-like haze that emanated from the sewer grate of a nearby building. Bishop cautiously entered the mist, guessing his android form would protect him from whatever effects it might have. Using his Android enhanced senses he analyzed the mist and determined it was in fact some form of hallucinogenic gas, harmless to him, but definitely a problem for Sherman and Tink. Another way around would have to be found. Bishop proceeded to move through the mist, unfortunately the purplish haze obscured a nearby open manhole and a cluster of amoebae-like ochre tentacles lurched out and tried to grab the android, he managed to barely leap out of reach of the beast. Realizing being on his own was quite dangerous, Bishop quickly got out of the mist and worked to regroup with the others. Tink and Sherman picked there way along a different route detouring through several collapsed buildings but were luckily once again able to stay on course thanks to Sherman’s innate sense of direction.
With the trio together again they continued their journey, darkness was fast approaching, and Sherman in particular was concerned about being out in the open at night, maybe it was from his conversation with the community’s scout, but everyone agreed that secured shelter was a must. With dusk upon them they finally found a suitable building to camp in for the night. An old Quickie Mart of the Ancients, still fairly intact, at least compared to the other buildings nearby. They quickly worked to secure it and fortify their position moving old shelves and even an old aisle cooler to cover the door and windows. They found an old box of nails that Sherman pocketed as well as some other bits and bobs. Not wanting to risk a fire, they huddled quietly in a back corner of the building behind an old freezer; they set up watches and tried to rest. During the night they heard eerie sounds outside, risking a look, Sherman and Tink (both able to see in the darkness) spied two hunched over scaly grey humanoids creeping about in the street, the humanoids were tearing into the corpse of a goatman. The trio watched the grisly meal in silent horror; eventually the two humanoids dragged the remains of the goatman down into a sewer hole and disappeared. Shuddering the trio kept extra quiet for the rest of the night; none of them slept soundly knowing what was lurking just outside in the shadows.
At dawn they headed out again, Tink suggested they cover any manholes or notable sewer entrances with rubble and debris; everyone thought this was a good idea. It ate up a bit of time but if they rescued the Healer they’d have to come back this way, and the harder it was for those things to move around the better their odds of making it back to JymsWard alive and uneaten!
In spite of everything, they were actually making good time. They travelled for most of the day without incident. Stopping only occasionally for a quick rest or meal of dried rations. The ruins and rubble were less of an obstacle and hazard in this area. Less ruined buildings made for faster travel, however it also meant less cover for the group. They were in an area with no visible sewers/manholes, but still began to get concerned about shelter for the night. Travelling onward, they finally found an old ruined bank that was still intact. It was not nearly as secured as the Quickie Mart, but it was the best option available. They fortified it as best they could; the structure had clearly been looted long ago. The vault door was still intact and solid. Tink found signs that someone had apparently tried to blow the vault, but their nearby bones showed they’d only succeeded in blowing themselves to bits. Whatever treasures the ancients had stored therein were still untouched and would remain so for now. They hunkered down for the night and hoped for the best. Just a few short hours into the night the trio was startled by the baying of wolves, they smelled them before they spotted them, a pack of mangy, tumor covered wolves skulked about in the street, on the hunt. Hunkering down behind the ancient freezer, the group of heroes prayed that the wind wouldn’t shift and give away their position. Fortune smiled upon them as the pack of mutie wolves moved off into the distance, apparently unaware of their presence in the old ruined bank. Barely a half hour later, on Sherman’s watch, he noted a large shadowy mass of darkness moving across the street. Using his enhanced vision he realized it was a swarm of rats, but a swarm that seemed to move with a solid strength of purpose. The rat swarm moved as one, acted as one. Stopped and looked in his direction as one then moved off into the night. Sherman shuddered to himself…maybe it was just his imagination, maybe the rats weren’t looking at him at all…Maybe…
Dawn finally came, not soon enough for some, but with renewed purpose they set out. Sherman continued to map out their progress on the parchment he’d gotten from the community’s scout; Krash Helmut, he wondered if the kindly old scout would still be alive when they returned. Pushing such thoughts out of his mind he looked about and realized they were making better time than had been predicted. They should reach their destination sooner than expected.
After a half days travel they knew they were close. Cautiously the trio moved forward. By Sherman’s estimation they were right on top of The Goatlord’s lair. And both Tink and Bishop knew that Sherman’s estimations were right on the Domar. The lair was in an old ruined place of knowledge and learning of the ancients, something called a Skool…
The trio cautiously crept through the ruins surrounding The Goatlords lair, Bishop activated his Chameleon synthetic skin, the others moved as quietly as they could. Several Goatlord sentries were spotted in the outer buildings surrounding the old Skool. The trio had hoped to somehow slip in rescue Brother Thomas the healer and run away from the area. But that wasn't to be. One of the mutant goatmen got their scent and combat ensued! Things looked pretty grim, several goatmen poured out of the ruins, including a big scaley hound (a Rog). The initial wave of goatmen were armed mostly with melee weapons, using the terrain for cover and to confuse their foe our heroes made quick use of the poison that they had harvested from the giant radscorpion. This concoction proved particularly deadly to the otherwise tough goatmen. Several went down in the volley of poisoned arrows unleashed by the group. Bishop had climbed to the second floor of a ruined building and was hiding in the rubble (apparently the goatmen couldn't smell his android form or didn't register his scent as a threat), he hurled several poisoned darts at passing by goatmen killing many. The remaining goatmen engaged in melee with Sherman and Tink. Sherman took a beating, only Tink's mutant Damage Turning field kept him from death. Things were looking better for the group however; most of the Goatlords were down or dead, including their "pet" rog (repto-dog). Then a kevlar armored Goatlord emerged from the top of the old Skool, he bore a weapon of the ancients, some sort of energy pistol and proceeded to fire blasts at the now exposed android Bishop. The ruins Bishop were on caught on fire, but Sherman was completely exposed to the armored Goatlord and Tink was vulnerable as well. So Bishop stayed exposed and used his secret weapon and special Illusionary Phantasm (Holofield) Generator that caused the energy weapon bearing goatlman to see a frightening beast of the wastes coming after him. The startled goatman proceeded to blast away at the beast that wasn't there…
In order to maintain the field Bishop had to remain in place, which meant he was taking damage from the now burning building that he had been hiding in. Just then another goatman emerged from the roof access of the skool a big burly one with a massive axe, he was dragging the bound healer that the group was sent after. It looked as though the beastman intended to drop the poor healer off of the building, or at least threaten too. However before he could do this, Bishop switched the field to make it look like this new burly goatman was the wasteland horror and so the armored goatman started unknowingly blasting his ally. After a bloody fight, the goatmen were dead, Sherman rescued the healer and his medical bag from the skool building now also on fire, Tink recovered the laser pistol and armor, Bishop dropped off the burning building, his illusion field no longer needed. He was alive but badly burned; he wouldn't pass for a human anymore one entire side of his body was visible as being metal the synthetic skin had been burned away. But the healer was alive, bruised and battered but alive. They had rescued him, in spite of incredible odds and even had saved his medical bag, they could still save their community.

A Merry Christmas Gamma-Metal Shout out!

My buddy since 8th grade (which trust me was a looong time ago) Tormentor sent me a little surprise Christmas Present which came today.  He knows I love 80's Metal (yeah I know I'm showing my age).
He found a group neither of us had heard of before: Riot. Hey cut us a break there was no internet back then. : )  Anyways here is the album cover.

Is that image perfect for Mutant Future or what?  I may have to stat this pair up for my Campaign!
Call me crazy but Christmas makes me think of Heavy Metal and Gamma World! Before you think I'm off my rocker let me explain, my cousin would fly into town from California to visit every year over the Christmas holiday and stay with us for two weeks, he'd bring a sack of cool Heavy Metal cassettes (that's what came before CD's for you gentle young readers) to show off to us (we didn't have access to such music in our town back then) , Tormentor would come over and the three of us would listen to Heavy Metal while playing non-stop marathon sessions of Gamma World for days on end, we'd play without sleep until we'd get so cranky that we'd end up fighting and our folks would send us to bed!  Good Times!!
Merry Christmas!! We may be hundreds of miles apart but some memories and friendships never fade!

Another Successful Mutant Future Sunday!

We had part three of our ongoing Mutant Future Campaign today.  I'm sorry I'm terribly behind on posting about it.  Will try to get session logs up soon, so forgive me for being a tease, but it was a blast!  Did they rescue Brother Thomas in time? Did they get lost in The Mazes?  Did they make it through Trog Territory in one piece?  and what lies in the Church of St. Vermaine?
The gang is really getting into it and so am I, wild fun!  I thought today might be the wrap up before we moved on to something else as they had finished the story arc that I had worked up, but everyone indicated they really wanted to keep playing! So continue the campaign we shall!  Interesting how this one-shot turned mini-campaign is turning into a full blown Campaign!  Good Times!
Later,
 B.

Stars Without Number

Others have talked about it and I have to chime in about a new Retro Sci Fi RPG, Stars Without Number.
It is a sweet looking game, very well put together.  Gotta give kudos to the author.  I've been in a Sci Fi mood for awhile now and had considering dusting off my old Traveller books or getting some of the Mongoose Traveller books to maybe run some Traveller at some point in the new year, but after seeing this FREE rules-set I'm really thinking Stars Without Number is what I've been looking for.  Old Retro gaming based off the classic D&D system artfully merged with Traveller.  Good Stuff!
Plus the author has tons of helpful stuff for a GM wanting to run a Sci Fi Sandbox Campaign!
That was always something I struggled with a bit in my Traveller games of yesteryear.  When your players can be on a different planet at the punch of a Jump Drive, ya gotta be on top of your game to make the new worlds seem unique and different.  Stars Without Number has tons of features to make doing that much easier.
Oh and you guys know I love mutants and mutations, as an added cool factor, the next big release from the company according to the author is Other Dust, which will add a post apocalyptic Earth and mutations to the mix, Sweet! Looking forward to seeing more stuff from this author/company. Hmmmm now where did I put my old Alternity Campaign notes?  Definately some stuff in there I can use!

Simian Saturday : White Apes of Mars

Another Simian Saturday is here, where does the week go??
This one goes out to Clovis Cithog, from the Jasoomian Dreams blog.  His blog is dedicated to classic gaming on ERB's Barsoom.  His site features some awesome Miniatures for the setting ,as well as, stats for some of the classicly cool Barsoom Beasties. Oh word of caution, if your at work some of the minis featured on his site are in true Barsoom garb, in other words the ladies are in NO way over dressed.
He was even kindly enough to send me a copy of his rules RED PLANET to look at, I've been terribly remiss and not given him much feedback about them.  Hopefully this shout out will help make up for that.

Good Gaming!

Mutant Future Campaign Introduction

Mutant Future Campaign

Game Date : November 7, 2010
Introduction:
The fortified community of JymsWard has long been a bastion of hope and tolerance in a hostile world. Though predominantly human, the community consists of a variety of races; mutant and pure strain, animal and plant, all working together in order to survive in a world gone mad. Located near the heart of a vast ancient ruined city, JymsWard survived when other communities failed. Recently however, a new threat to the residents has emerged, not some fearsome mutant monster from the wastes or some diabolical living metal monstrosity but a more insidious danger, disease! Crimson Spotted Fever has struck the community; even the strongest members have been sickened and affected by this horrible mutated disease. Other towns, villages and communities in the outlying ruins, upon hearing of the outbreak, ceased trading with JymsWard, further adding to the people’s suffering. Cagetown always a rough and tumble place even went so far as to declare any refugees from JymsWard attempting to enter their town would be shot on sight. It was hoped that the Excalions of Knighthaven would be able to help, but those noble lionmen are currently engaged in a fierce battle to contain and drive back yet another outbreak of the hungry dead from Deadside.
However, not all hope is lost; word reached a travelling Healer, Brother Thomas in the nearby village of Wormhaven of the outbreak, Brother Thomas having the cure to this disease immediately set out for JymsWard in the hopes of saving the community. Somewhere along the way he was ambushed by a relatively new but nonetheless vicious gang of mutant goatmen, that have dubbed themselves The Goatlords, this raider gang is believed to be allied with the Zoopremists Cryptic Alliance, they somehow learned of his journey and kidnapped the kindly healer. Only the most vile, evil and foolish of folk would actually physically harm a member of The Healers, so The Goatlords offered him to the people of JymsWard for an unreasonable ransom. A ransom they simply cannot pay.
The JymsWard elders desperate, but still holding out hope assembled the few remaining healthy townsfolk that could be spared for a desperate journey. Something The Goatlords would not expect, a surgical strike into the heart of their territory to rescue the healer and bring him back safely to the dying community. They estimate at most the community has six to ten days before the plague reaches critical mass, after two weeks the team has been told there is no point in coming back at all; it’s a three day journey to The Goatlords lair, time is running out!

More to come....

Mutant Future Money: Silver and Gold and Bottle Caps?

My Mutant Future Campaign has its second session this afternoon, Woo Hoo!
Things are going well, the guys are taking to the game way better than I expected actually. None of them have played a P.A. RPG before, but they all adapted very well last session and quickly started working as an effective team to overcome some tough opponents!  I think the recent Fallout New Vegas release has everyone in a Post Apocalyptic gaming mood.
One issue I'm still trying to make a decision on is how to handle money in the campaign.
Mutant Future uses the Gold Coin standard,  which makes since for the game designers purposes, but I'm not sure that is the sole way I want to go for my campaign.  The players rolled their starting gold bought their gear and then headed out.  However, do I want them finding gold coins as treasure on a regular basis? Sure I can see it potentially having value (look at the markets today for an example, every time I turn on the TV or radio someone is saying to "Buy GOLD!"), I can see some cool adventures with them raiding old vaults and such for gold, but wouldn't there be other money systems used as well?
Fallout uses the cool Bottlecaps concept.  Which fits the Fallout Retro 50's style setting perfectly, but I'm not sure it works for my current campaign.

Darwin's World uses Corium (a rare and dangerous to harvest metal found at the bottom of old nuclear reactors) and Classic Gamma World used the Domar, a type of money of the Ancients.
I could use a variation of all of the above, depending on where the characters are on the campaign map, different enclaves, towns and such might use different meanse of exchange, not to mention the ever present Barter system.  Hmmm something to ponder...
Anyways I was just curious what the rest of you Mutant Lord's were doing in your games.
Later,
 B.

100 Mutant Followers!!

Woo Hoo! Reached the 100 Followers Mark!  I think that qualifies me for Mutant Horde status doesn't it??Thanks for everyone who takes the time to read and comment on my blog.  I really appreciate you all. I've only had this blog up for a little over a year, and in that short time I have met some really awesome people.  Some might call it strange that I consider some folks that I've never met to be friends, but I have indeed made some great friendships thanks to this blog.  You guys are the best!!
Radioactively Yours,

Minis Madness on a budget!

As you all probably know by now I'm a Miniatures Nut but all that lead can be pretty darn expensive!
Here's what came in the mail for me today:

Got these for a great price, some were only .09 apiece, and I don't think I paid more than .70 for any of them.  I got alot of Star Wars and Heroclix in this batch, they work great for my Mutant Future games, and any future Sci Fi games I may run. Alot of the secondary characters and critters work great for generic mutants, monsters and madmen!  ; )
Oh some of you have emailed me asking where I get these great deals.
This batch is from Game Hollow but I've also had great success with Miniature Market (Game Hollow is a bit more on shipping than MM).  Another company I've used in the past is Auggies great service and prices although he doesn't have as wide a selection as he used to (guess I bought it all up! LOL).  Anyways thought I'd share some of my minis resources with you.
When I get time I'll rebase the Heroclix minis, but its Finals week for me so back to studying!

Simian Saturday : Lego Gorilla!

Here's a bit of a different Simian Saturday post, long time readers will know I'm a Lego fan, I just recently found out about this little guy on the net.

Kind of a neat looking little mini fig, course I'd lose the banana and replace it with some BrickArms guns and such!

Black Friday/Cyber Monday Sales!

I do my best to avoid going outside of the house on Black Friday, although my wife did "force" me to go to Old Time Pottery today...which turned into a "quick" trip to Garden Ridge which...well you get the idea.
But thanks to the wonderful world of the internet I can do my personal shopping at home! Woo Hoo!
In reading my buddy Tommy's blog The Most Unread Blog on the Internet. Ever. I learned of some great sales in the pdf gaming world!
I've been eyeing Interface Zero for Savage Worlds for awhile now, and at the bargain price of $8 I picked it up, not too mention several other pdfs for $1 a piece, including Silver Gryphon Games' Wellstone City line, looks like a really cool Gritty Urban Locale that I can tweak for my own dastardly purposes (right now I'm thinking of tweaking it to use as the main locale for a possible Interface Zero Campaign). I grabbed the Icons Super Hero RPG rules too, not sure about Fate based supers, but it was only a BUCK!
I'm still an old fashioned book in hand sort of guy but I figure I can check out the pdfs for a great price and the ones that really float my boat I'll pick up in print at some point.

Well gotta run, have alot of reading to do!!                              *insert maniacal laughter here*

Looking around for more Jack Kirby inspired artwork from Kamandi and such I found this cool picture.
Great inspiration for Mutant Future/Weird Science Tech!

"Maybe One Day"

I found this on the net yesterday, a "What If" drawing by Stefano Pavan, illustrating the question,"“What if Kamandi met Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers?”.
Is this amazingly cool or what?
I've talked about Kamandi before on my blog a truly classic Jack Kirby comic.  Captain Victory is another Kirby comic from the early 80's.  Merge the two and I think I've found the Campaign I've been looking for!
Mwha ha ha!!!

Friends of Starship Warden

While other sites have mentioned this, I'd be remiss if I didn't cover it as well. Those who know me, know that I cut my gaming teeth not on D&D, but instead on Gamma World.  That was the first RPG I ever ran, and it has always had a special place in my gamer heart.  Heck my on-line handle since the 90's has been Brutorz Bill in tribute to my first Gamma World character and my love for the game.  Sadly the original brilliant mind behind the first edition of that game; Jim Ward is quite ill.  A website has been set up Friends of the Starship Warden offering a way for those who can help to do so.
Thanks for reading,

The Empire Strikes Back "1950's Style"

Still feeling blah, wife won't let me go back to work.  Fever Smever...
Anyways, after Sunday's off the cuff Mutant Future game, the guys said they'd like to maybe play something Sci Fi. Battling the Kevlar Armored Goatlord with his Laser Pistol really sparked their interest in guns and such. I'll admit I've been on a bit of a Sci Fi kick of late myself.  I may have to look into Mongoose Traveller a bit more.  Meanwhile here's a little something I stumbled across on the 'net.

Pardon my Rant

Pardon my little rant here for a bit.  I think, well actually I know for a fact, my least favorite part of DMing is the management/politics.  You know what I'm talking about... the coordinating of schedules, the behind the scenes emails, listening to folks who have issues with another player or your choice of miniatures etc...  As you all know I've been running, or trying to run a Labyrinth Lord game, well folks understandably have lives and schedules so we haven't been able to meet that regularly.  I tried to make sure we had enough players to play.  So I put out a recruitment poster.  Does that say anything about this being a 3.5 game??? Apparently to some folks it does, or at least they decided it would become that if they sent me enough emails about it, or whined enough about this not being 3.5, or that they were doing me some kind of favor by playing "my" game even though it wasn't 3.5...
I apparently should have also added that the game didn't mean for you to bring your small children either.  I'm all for folks playing with their kids, and involving them with their hobby, I game with my family as well on occassion.  BUT my intentions were for this game to have some mature content not really appropriate for youngsters, nothing bad, but just not gentle either. Wouldn't you ask before you just up and decided to bring your kid(s)?  Hmmmm maybe I'm just the grouchy old man yelling at kids to get off of my lawn??
Anyways, I admittedly get aggravated by this kind of the thing and in the past have just "taken my toys and gone home" maybe the problem is me.  Maybe trying to run a regular long term campaign that meets consistently and frequently is just not where my life is right now. Our last session ended with the players in a tight spot in the middle of a dungeon, we are down a core player and some of the others can't make it or aren't coming, for reasons stated above. I emailed the guys, the core ones I have and based on their feedback we've decided to play Mutant Future today.
Now I know why so many of my old gamer friends have shifted to Board Games.
Rant Off...

Memphis Comic & Fantasy Convention

The wife and I spent the afternoon at the Memphis Comic & Fantasy Convention.

This was the Con's debut.  We had a nice time.  I hope to see it continue to grow and expand in years to come.  There wasn't alot of gaming going on, but it was still fun, as an added bonuse there was a full BrickArms vendor present, so of course I had to pick up some new BrickArms weapons and such..  I even ran into some folks I work with, but didn't know that they were gamers, so I may have some additional gaming opportunities in the future, as a result.  All in all a fun time.

Simian Saturday : King Kong vs. Frankenstein!

Well it's Simian Saturday once again, Clovis Cithog has already emailed for my lateness in posting today.  CC thanks for keep me straight!  : )
Anyways I recently came across an article regarding unmade movie classics. And one in particular really caught my eye!                                  King Kong vs. Frankenstein

King Kong's creator, famed animator Willis O'Brien, conceived a script (in the 1960s) that he called "King Kong vs Frankenstein", planned second "sequel" to his original 1933 film. It was never made, though in the end, as "King Kong vs Prometheus", it was sold to Toho Studios in Japan, who re-conceived the project as Kingu Kongu tai Gojira [King Kong vs Godzilla] (1962; dir. Ishiro Honda) -- and then again, sans Kong, as Furankenshutain tai chitei kaiju Baragon [Frankenstein vs the Subterranean Monster Baragon] (1965; dir. Ishiro Honda) aka Frankenstein Conquers the World (US, 1966).

Shame it was never made, the original King Kong  is one of my favorite movies ever!
Have a happy Simian Saturday, the wife and I are off to a comic book convention!  Woo Hoo!

Hunter Prey

I posted about this movie awhile ago. I just read where it will be available as a direct to DVD release in December. I may just have to pick this up.  Looks pretty cool. Could make for some fun Traveller (or other sci fi) game inspiration!

Simian Saturday

Well here in the States election day approaches, don't worry I'm not about to do a political post at least not too overt of one. But...whatever party, political outlook or leaning you are, please take the time on election day to vote!

Simian Saturday

Happy Simian Saturday everyone!  Haven't posted much lately, work has reared its ugly head again.
Due to scheduling we had to bump our next Labyrinth Lord game session to November, but it is still on track.
Hope you get some gaming in this weekend.

Rusty the Rust Monster

When I was a kid I actually had the plastic monster that Gygax based the Rust Monster on.
While I lost the plastic beastie many many years ago (not to mention the original was way to big for use with 28mm minis, unless your creating a Giant Dire Rust Monster!), I've been on the hunt for awhile now for a suitable 28mm Rust Monster for my collection.  I've found a few on Ebay over the years, but they quickly went beyond what I was willing to pay for a mini.  I finally lucked out and got one for a good price, an added bonus was that it was even painted to a good tabletop standard.
He arrived via mail today.

Rusty the Rust Monster
Curiously he was shipped in a METAL Altoids container, must have been fast shipping indeed, otherwise ole' Rusty would have eaten through the metal and escaped!

Jurassic Reich & Hamster Berserkers!

Here's another quick post about miniatures today!
While surfing the net I found these!

WWII Germans mounted on Dinosaurs!  Oh my Stars and Garters!!! They are from Eureka Miniatures.
These look soo cool and while I'll admit Pulp isn't necessarily my first game of choice, I see these as being perfect for Mutant Future, Encounter Critical and  all kinds of other games, in addition to pulp!
You could even have them fight these guys!! Hamster Berserkers!!!
Just released by On the lamb games.

Man I love this hobby!
Hmmm now where did I put my debit card....

I love Minis!!

My name is Brutorz Bill and I'm a minis-aholic.  I love collecting Miniatures.  28mm, 15mm,  terrain, toys that can be used as minis, more and more...and...
Ok...sorry lost myself for a moment.
Anyways I resisted buying minis for awhile. It was hard but I did it. Then Christian over at Destination Unknown started posted his latest minis purchases, and that itch of mine just had to be scratched!
I went out to Miniatures Market found a ton of prepainted minis for as low as .25 cents!
Here's what the mail man brought me yesterday:

Sorry for the blurry pics but you get the idea.  All of these were under a dollar each, and many were in the .25-.35 cents range. Mostly Star Wars, Hero clix and Horro clix but they work just fine for my gaming purposes! Some will work better with Mutant Future than Labyrinth Lord but for .25 cents ya can't lose! At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it! LOL
Anyways gotta run, I have to go sort my minis!

Mutant Monday News...

Not sure this will be a regular blog feature, but thought I'd post some of the Post Apocalyptic RPG related items that I've come across of late.
While I am continuing to have a blast with Labyrinth Lord, I don't want to let some news on the Mutant Front get away (hmmm the Mutant Front? now there's a campaign idea!, oh sorry back on track). I've gotta be careful, I've got the dreaded Defect of Gamer ADD that I must keep in check!

I've recently gotten an update that The Mutant Epoch RPG is slated for a late October release.  I've chatted with these guys a bit, they are some great folks, the artist did alot of the Goodman Games DCC's back in the 3.5 era.

On the Mutant Future front, there are some great products in the pipe from Skirmisher, I can't really say much about them (I'm such a tease), but I don't think Mutant Future Players will be disappointed.

Dark Horse comics will release the new Samson Post Apoclyptic Comic series in December.
Trey gives a great write-up about the original series on his blog. (special thanks to Jay for pointing out the new comic series coming out).

I recently found where WotC will be releasing some fiction for the new Gamma World game, old news but I just now found it. I have deliberately NOT posted my opinion about the upcoming Gamma World game, I think I'll continue that trend for now...

And on my latest trip to the FLGS I spotted the below item on the shelf!
Of course I had to pick it up! I can't read it yet though, I don't want to get thrown off track from my Labyrinth Lord Campaign. The map on the back is sweet, all kinds of kingdoms and nations that I really want to know more about! Anyways just thought I'd share the radioactive love with the mutant masses!

Nerd Sunday Success! Labyrinth Lord Style!

I just got in from my very first session DMing (or should I say Labyrinth Lording?) the new Labyrinth Lord group.  You may recall I recently put together a flyer looking for players.  Well today was our first session!  I had a blast and I think everyone else did as well.  Folks were really getting into the Old School vibe.  I slipped into some 3.xisms a couple of times but got better as we played. Two folks couldn't make it and one was a no show, but I still had 4 great players in attendance.  One guy, smiled and said  this IS ROLE-Playing not ROLL-Playing!  I couldn't agree more! The player who played Autumnus and I have been trying to get together and game for a year now, I hope he had as much fun as I did.

The Cast:
Nim & Min : human "merchants" (read Assassins) twin brothers
Oliver the half-elf thief
Autumnus the elf magic user
They had a couple of NPC's a henchman Ranger who didn't talk much named "Injun Joe" and a hireling,of sorts, Skippy the Halfling, who talked too much.
The party arrived in the northern town (formerly city) of Threshold in the Black Peaks region and met over drinks at the Shady Dragon Inn.  Oliver attempted to woo a fetching lass ( a robed mystery woman with a black cat) by buying her cat soup! (he had a wisdom of 4), she was more confused than anything else.  Oliver then made the mistake of chatting with a group of halflings ( The Callowtoe Clan? Gang?) long story for another day. They eventually (after flattering Ebenezer the Old) gained an audience with Belrain the Sword_Singer the local authority and got a job to recon a ruined moathouse and possibly clear out any bandits or monsters therein. Knowing they were short of muscle and not great in the wilds, Nim or was in Min? Spent a good bit of gold hiring the skilled tracker "Injun Joe", this helped them avoid what would have been some tough wilderness encounters.  They did a great job infiltrating the ruined moathouse, well everyone but Skippy, and through stealth, trickery, guile and alot of luck got inside, killed or drove away several brigands, killed a bugbear and made their way down below through an old secret door that Autumnus detected. We were supposed to wrap up at 6 but everyone wanted to keep going so we squeezed in another hour, which allowed enough time for the Assassin, I mean "merchant" Min (or was it Nim?) to assassinate an ogre while the ogre was attempting to relieve itself (Gnomes cause diarrhea don't ya know).
The wild thing is no one died!  Well no one but Skippy (he was eaten by a giant frog just outside the moathouse). There were a few close calls, but the party (veteran gamers, though some were new to Old School) played smart throughout the day and accomplished alot!
Course they still have to get out of the dungeon alive and deal with the pissed off Callowtoe Halflings.
All in all a great day!  Good to be gaming again!

Simian Saturday : Gorilla Knight

I'm still on my Labyrinth Lord path (must fight off Gamer ADD) and I found this awhile back, a classic tweaked by the artist Gunmetal.  Thought the Gorilla Knight looked pretty cool.
Happy Simian Saturday!

The Compendium of Weapons, Armour & Castles

This one has been on my list for awhile, I had and lost a copy of it many years ago.  While it is done by Palladium Books it is useable for any RPG that features ancient weapons, armor and castles.

This tome is a great resource for the game table. I remember back in my early days of playing AD&D trying to figure out what some of the different polearms looked like, ya know how that a Lucern Hammer was not a hammer at all? How did we survive before the invention of the internet and Google? : ) Anyways this book has tons of stats and illustrations of various historical weapons and such.

Even better John over at the Land of Nod has posted conversion notes for Labyrinth Lord!
No more basic Swords and Axes for my games! Woo Hoo!
Oh and price was an UNBELIEVABLE Bargain!
I got this off of Amazon for...drum roll please....
.27 CENTS!!
You can't beat that!

Labyrinth Lord Recruitment Poster!

I want to game! I'm ready to get back in the saddle again, hopefully school will cooperate, I'm mid-way through my last semester! Woo Hoo!  Work isn't quite so crazy and I'm ready to do some DMing again.  I want to play Labyrinth Lord!  The FLGS has alot of 4E and some 3.x players, but that's not what I'm into these days.  I'm yearning for a simpler rules system. One that with my limited time schedule will only call for limited game prep time.  Sooo I finally got off of my butt created a Yahoo group, posted my house rules and such and worked up a Recruitment Poster. Here it is minus my contact info, don't want to get spammed don't ya know!

I haven't even put it out at my FLGS yet and thanks to my buddy Michael who posted it on a local gaming forum, I'm already getting hits! I've already got enough folks committed to run a game, with several more interested.
How cool is that?  I even ran this by the Labyrinth Lord Society guys and they gave me some great positive feedback.  Sooo if your thinking about gaming but think there aren't any old schoolers around, try something like this out, so far it has worked really well for me.  I will keep you all posted!

Toy Monsters for your D&D games!

I recently spotted an excellent post by Jim over at the Carjacked Seraphim blog about Bargain Bin monsters.
I slipped out this afternoon and stopped at the Big Lots and scored a couple of cool monsters that Jim had mentioned over on his blog.
There's all kinds of neat toys and such out there that are perfect for use in your D&D/Labyrinth Lord Games
Bill and his War Dog "Precious" Confront the Mesmerizing Sphynx-Beast
Bill and Precious now must the battle the giant Croc-Baboon!
Having seen yesterday's post, my wonderful wife reminded me that there was another Michael's not far from our house, so after leaving Big Lots I headed over there.
A Phoenix Rises from the flames!
The phoenix was in the toy section, the "flame" crystals were on one of the aisles I wandered by, perfect for flames or somesuch.

On the same trip I found this awesome Green Dragon!
Even with their newfound ally the mysterious Githzerai Mage, can Bill and Precious overcome this powerful foe?
Our party battles a Gaunt Giant (no that's not a Star Wars Figure? what are you talking about! LOL)
Found this Star Wars Action Figure awhile ago and thought it would work fine for some sort of Undead Giant or somesuch. What ya think?

And you thought you were having a bad day?
The Dragons (& Hydra) are all purchases from Michael's.
So next time your wife or girlfriend tells you she is headed to the craft store, ya might want to tag along! : )
Good Gaming - B.

Oh and for anyone interested, the Bill mini is an old OOP IronClaw mini, Precious is an old Citadel mini and the Githzerai is a RAFM Space 1889 mini, I think it also is OOP.
