Just ordered The Traveller Book off of RPGNOW. I had a blast playing Classic Traveller back in High School, we had Study Hall right after lunch, we would wolf down our lunch and start playing then extend our game into Study Hall. Needless to say, we didn't get much studying done, we were too busy conducting guerrilla raids, engaging in galactic piracy, looting, pillaging and selling black market goods. Ahh Good Times. Fortunately I've found I never needed Algebra in my adult life so I think it worked out pretty well. LOL, I contacted my best friend since High School, he lives many miles away so we may try to get in some gaming with Google Hangouts, we haven't ever played any games on-line, but Classic Traveller seems like the perfect game mechanic for it. Will see how it goes!

Let me know what the quality is like when you get it; I had heard the PDF wasn't a great scan, not sure if it translates to print well....but if it does I definitely want a copy!
ReplyDeleteLOL'ed about the algebra reference, just joked with a colleague at work today about no one remembering algebra right before I gave him a classic algebraic problem at work....(accounting for insurance, lucky me)
Will do Nicholas! Eww Algebra at work! I don't envy that at all!
DeleteI've been gaming via hangouts with a friend and his girlfriend who moved across the continent a number of months ago. It works quite well indeed. Fun times.
ReplyDeleteHaven't tried it with multiple logged in members yet. So I can't really comment on that. I know with skype there are some clipping issues when two people try and talk at the same time.
Hey Dave! Thanks for dropping by, if we get to do it I'll post how it goes. : )
DeleteMy first foray into G+ gaming was Star Frontiers, which I picked for the same reasons. Fun memories and rules I was familiar with.
ReplyDeleteG+ isn't a replacement for face-to-face gaming, but it lets me game with friends who are now several states away and that's a Good Thing.
I hear ya Fractalbat. Star Frontiers is a fun game as well. Thanks for the comment!
DeleteHow different is Classic Traveller from the Mongoose iteration, do you know?
ReplyDeleteI'm not that familiar with the Mongoose Version, I've heard it is a more "cleaned up" version of Classic, and you don't have the chance of dying during character generation but I don't know that from personal experience.
DeleteYou can choose the iron man mode and die with failed survival rolls. Otherwise your roll on a bad stuff happens chart that can result in injury and big medical debt to start you adventures with.
DeleteI think the layout is clear and all together in one book. Also certain implicit rules may be explicitly stated. I'm very unfamiliar with classic traveller though.
and you don't have the chance of dying during character generation
DeleteWhat kind of liberal bullshit is that?!
I recieved my copy of TTB last week from DriveThru. I didn't own the original to compare it to, but I think the reprint turned out great. As far as I'm concerned it's a great buy for a hardcover that contains all the rules of CT.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear Dervishdelver! I'm looking forward to getting my copy. I had the original back in the day, but haven't had a copy in hand in years.
