I remember reading someplace that Godzilla's original Japanese name was taken from a stagehand/grip type person at Toho. He was a big dude that everyone called Gojira.

Well, since Godzilla's original name was a Japanese portmanteau of "whale" (kojira) and "gorilla", this makes sense on a lot of levels.
