Tellos

I stopped by my Friendly Local Comic Shop on the way home from work yesterday. I didn't see much that interested me on the current release shelves, but the owner had put some stuff on the bargain rack that I hadn't noticed the last time I was there. Of particular interest was this one...
A compilation of the Tellos comic series.  If your not familiar with this one you may want to keep your eyes peeled for it.  This is not a Savage Sword and Sorcery resource by any means and it is a bit "cartoony" but that's part of the appeal of it at least to me.  I've been reading about some of my fellow bloggers running adventures for their kids.  Tellos is prime campaign material to use for games with your youngsters.  Airships, Floating cities, Frog Soldiers, Fox thieves, Turtle Wizards, cool stuff. I had a few of the original comics for it back in the day and even converted some items from it for my 3.0 Campaign. The comic does have some serious themes, and some of the characters do get injured and even die. If I get time (yeah right) I may stat up some of the critters found in it for Labyrinth Lord.

  2. Thanks,
It was a great series. I couldn't believe I lucked up and found the compilation for $9.
Sadly one of the main writers of the series died unexpectedly back in 2007, so don't know if more stories will ever be done.

  3. Also... I could easily see using the stuff from,"How to Train Your Dragon" with this setting. The Viking island could be plopped right into Tellos with no adjustments really needed.

  4. I started reading it when I was working at a comic shop in college. I was really bummed when I heard Mike Wieringo the artist and creator died. :( He was really talented and I always loved his playful art style.

  5. Amanda,
yeah he was quite young, I believe it was an aneurism. Very tragic. His playful art style to me is what helped make the series so cool.

  6. Mike Wieringo was a real loss. He had a great attitude towards comic books, and I think was a breath of fresh air for the industry.

  7. I agree about Wieringo. I loved his art. I liked Tellos well enough, as well, I think I still have it around here somewhere. However, I'm pretty sure that it ended with "it was all a dream." I hate that.
